My dog has black tarry poop after HGE. Is this normal for recovery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | 11 lbs

My miniature dachshund presented with acute HGE on Friday. After three days in ICU on IV and drug treatment she is now home to recover. Her first poo was black and tarry on Monday morning followed by another similar poo Monday night. I know it's early days still but is this black poo normal in recovery? She is wearing a pain patch and taking oral flagyl. Her diet is still chicken and rice. Her fluid intake in normal.

Hello, sorry to hear about Molly. Yes the dark stools are likely melena (digested blood) from her hemorrhagic enteritis which may take up to 10 days to resolve completely. As long as she is eating, not vomiting, and the frequency/volume/and consistency of her stools is improving, even if slowly, then Molly can continue to be monitored at home. If she develops inappetence, vomiting or recurrent diarrhea, then she should be evaluated by your veterinarian immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.
