My dog's paw hurts and he won't walk. Is it a cut? Home care or vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mountain Cur | Male | neutered | 11 months and 5 days old | 50 lbs

Hello my dog was screaming/whining this morning and wouldn't walk on his back foot so I checked it out and what seems like I blister or sore? Not sure he won't let me touch his paw because Im sure it hurts. Just wondering what this may be? If I can treat it at home or maybe take him to the vet?

This looks like a cut on the pad in the picture. You can soak Solomom's foot in warm water twice daily and gently cleanse it with some antibacterial soap. The warm water should be soothing and if you gently massage his foot while it's in the water you should be able to clean the area and feel if there is something in the foot. I wouldn't put anything on this as that will encourage licking. Foot injuries are painful. If the area gets more swollen and red, or he's not walking on it better in a day or so then I would bring him in for and exam. He may need antibiotics if the cut gets infected. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Solomon.
