Dog's skin tag bleeding and oozing pus. Should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 4 months old | 13.8 lbs

My dog has a had a skin tag (diagnosed by vet) for years now that, in the last month, has started losing blood and pus. It does not hurt him, he doesn’t even notice it’s there. Should I take him back in to be evaluated or just consider it still benign and keep it clean?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the pictures! Some benign skin bumps, especially sebaceous adenomas can produce discharge. If the bump has been oozing puss and blood it is best to have your Vet re-evaluate it to either: 1) shave the fur, clean it and provide antibiotics or 2) discuss removing it since it has changed and now may continue to be a source of irritation and infection for Cooper. I hope this helps and I wish you and Cooper the best!
