Why does my dog cry before and after pooping, but isn't constipated?

My dog is crying as if she is constipated but isn’t although she still keeps trying to go toilet she doesn’t cry whilst trying. Just before and after

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lilly! From your post I am assuming that Lilly is producing stool, but she is asking to go out and poop a lot and is crying before and after pooping. Is the stool normal or diarrhea? If it is loose then she likely has diarrhea and is crying and going more often because she has the urge or feeling she has to go. If the stool is normal then I would have her anal glands examined and a rectal exam performed by your Vet. If she has diarrhea, fast her for 12 hours to rest her tummy then feed a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger mixed with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day as small frequent meals.     Poor Lilly. Her increased urination and drinking constantly could indicate a mild infection or a urinary track infection. I would recommend taking her into your veterinarian for a urinalysis and proper exam to make sure everything is OK. She may need a short course of antibiotics to get her back to normal. Her not pooping can be normal, as long as she isn't straining to defecate.

Your dog may have a problem with constipation, her anal glands may be inflamed or infected which can be very painful, there are a number of possibilities. I recommend getting her checked by your vet. If it is anal glands your vet can show you how to express the material from them so it doesn't build up and get painful, or if you take her to a groomer, they can do it when she gets a bath.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! She may be constipated. You may add a bit of canned pumpkin to her meals to help with that. If no improvement is noted, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!

My puppy had his anal glands done today and now when he tries too poop he yelps!! Is this normal??
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Ollie! It isn't normal for a dog to cry during defecation. It could be that the anal glands are inflamed from being full or from the pressure of being expressed. If it continues call your Vet they may just prescribe something over the phone or want to recheck him. I usually prescribe a steroid taper for things like this. Good luck!

Hi sam is 9 weeks old he has settled in great is eating normally and drinking normally he is being a normal happy puppy is not losing weight but when he is going to poo he gets really frantic and crying but stops as soon as poo comes out is this norm
No this is not normal and indicates there may be a source of pain and discomfort around the back passage causing some reluctance to empty his bowels. Anal gland issues would be quite common and your vet or vet nurse can check and empty them for you if required. Ensure he is up to date with worm treatments also as they can cause discomfort in this area also and that stool is not too hard or soft resulting in straining

Puppy about 3 mts old. Eats both dry and can food. Somewhat playful. Strains to poop. Diarrhea squirts only, not hard poop at all. Why would she be poppinglike this ? And what can I do ? I can not afford to take her to the Vet. Help me please and tha
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Lilly! When dogs have diarrhea they have the urge to poop even though they have very little stool to get out. So they strained and sometimes only a little poop comes out. Causes of diarrhea in young puppies are: viral infections-Parvo being the biggest concern. If she is not up to date on vaccines or has never received vaccines then Parvo is on the list. Other causes: other viral or bacterial infection, intestinal parasites, ate something gross outside that is upsetting her belly, toxin ingestion, or food sensitivity. I recommend starting a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed her small frequent meals. Feed 1/4 cup every 8 hours. If Lilly stops eating, starts vomiting, becomes lethargic she needs to go to the Vet. She is so tiny she could deteriorate quickly. I hope this helps and I wish Lilly a speedy recovery!

CoCo has been whining all day. She is eating but i have noticed that she haven't pooped at all today, but she did pee. Could she be constipated? If so, can i give her a laxative?
Thank you for using Boop by Petco! I’m sorry to hear that CoCo seems “off.” If you have not noticed her straining to pass stool, it is unlikely that she, as a young dog, is constipated. Most commonly whining will be due to pain/discomfort, stress, or boredom. Since she is eating and it doesn’t sound like she’s vomited, as long as her attitude seems normal (not dumpy) it is reasonable to give her some time and see how she is in the morning. However if she seems dumpy/lethargic, if she is limping noticeably or is not wanting to walk, or is having any vomiting, I would recommend you take her to a vet tonight. As far as a laxative, for future reference, hold off on giving any laxative until a vet has evaluated her and given specific instructions. A laxative could make another underlying problem worse due to its potential to cause dehydration. I hope you can both get some rest this evening! Thank you for using Boop by Petco!

My dog cries when she poops a lot of the time, Also, when I lift up her tail, she whines. Do you have any idea what this means? Could it be serious?
Your dog could have hip or back problems that make it painful to posture to defecate and would also make it hurt when her tail is manipulated. It could also be infected or inflamed anal glands. This condition is very painful and makes it difficult to defecate or even move. Without treatment, the gland may rupture, causing a open wound on your pet's rear that will require wound care and antibiotics as well as some pain relief. I recommend getting your pet seen by your vet. They will examine your pet, possibly do some x-rays and labwork and be able to give you a better idea of what is going on and how best to treat it.

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! I recommend having Bandit's anal glands checked by a vet. Dogs have sacs inside their rectum that can become infected and cause pain when defecating. Having the glands checked will also ensure a rectal exam too. This may help narrow down the reason he is in pain. Please do not give any medications until you talk to a vet. Dog crying when pooing yet he’s having soft sometimes mucas poos
When a dog has colitis (inflammation of the colon), they will often have mucous in their stool, but it is also often painful. My puppy started yelping and running around when she was pooping this morning.
Poor Biscuit! It is possible she is a little constipated. If it happens again, she has pain or swelling around the anus, can't go potty at all, or has any other signs of illness, a vet visit is best. Making sure she's drinking enough water and eating an appropriate diet, and also wormed regularly may also help.
