My dog's face is swollen a day after distemper shot. Is it normal?

Hello. I'm sorry to hear that Gizmo's face is swollen. Usually vaccine reactions occur within a couple hours of receiving the vaccine. It could be a delayed reaction or possibly a bug bite. You can try giving Gizmo 50 mg of Benadryl, but if this does not stop the swelling within and hour or two, he should visit your vet. Best to you and Gizmo.

    Any swelling around the face or head can be vaccine-related. However, I typically see swelling after vaccines more closely associated with the muzzle. If Theo is acting normally otherwise (eating/drinking, alert, playful, etc) then I'd give it a bit of time. If no resolution to this swelling after a day, have it checked out.

This type of allergic reaction, even with treatment, can take up to 48 hours to resolve completely, give it a little more time, if by tomorrow there is no improvement take her back to your vet for a second injection.

Swelling of the face and mouth/facial swelling are often initial symptoms of an anaphylactic/allergic reaction. These reactions can occur in dogs after vaccines, after exposure to a food or substance they are allergic to, or after a bite from an insect. As it is impossible to predict whether an anaphylactic reaction will remain localized or progress to trouble breathing, which can be life threatening, it is safest to contact a 24 hour vet for Bella at this time to have her seen. The ER may recommend a treatment plan including anti-histamines, corticosteroids +/- epinephrine and montitoring until the selling has gone down. They will also likely recommend an at home dose for Benadryl after establishing a valid patient/client relationship if this should occur again as it is uncertain at this point what Bella is allergic to. Wishing Bella a quick recovery!

My dogs face is swelling after a vaccination he got today. Is this dangerous or what can we do to help him? Some of the side effects were facial swelling but I’m not sure if that’s dangerous or not.
It is only dangerous if the swelling is causing her to have difficulty breathing. Getting her to a vet is the best option but if you want to try something at home you can give Benadryl by mouth at 1mg per pound of body weight (example, if she is 25 pounds, she would get 25 mg). Always let the vet know when she is vaccinated in the future that she had a previous reaction.

I woke up this morning to my dogs face swollen really bad what do I do
A sudden swollen face is usuaally caused by some allergy, either an insect bite or an environmental allergy, or could also be a rattle snake bite. Check for oozing little wounds, there would be a little blood oozing but not coagulating. If you find those on the head, your dog likely was bitten by a snake and needs to be seen by a vet right away. If your dog has breathing problems, vomits or is lethargic, he should also be seen by a veterinarian right away. If he is happy, eats and drinks, you can observe the swelling and it should go down within 24 hours. Of course you can also take him to the vet if he is not in distress. The vet will give him an exam and likely an antihistamine and/or steroid injection.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What you are describing sounds like an allergic reaction. You can give benadryl to see if this helps. The safe dose of Benadryl to give is typically 1mg per 1lb of body weight every 12 hours. If there is no improvement or the area worsens I would get him seen by your vet as soon as possible.

My puppy got her rabies vaccination today - I just noticed this under her eye now. Is this normal? Her temperament has been normal. She’s 4 months old. I’m worried, and my vet is closed now. Thank you!
It can be a sign of a reaction to the vaccine. If that is the case, the swelling may spread around her muzzle and spot bumps can appear on her body and legs. You can give an over the counter antihistamine such as Benadryl to help with the reaction. If it proceeds to spread and gets worse and itch her, then I would contact an ER clinic for further care.

my dog went into jaggy bush and 3 hours later one side of face is swollen at nose and eye.
Check and see if he has any scratches or cuts that need to be cleaned. If he does, clean them gently with a clean washcloth and tap water. Do not use hydrogen peroxide as this will be very irritating to the damaged skin and if it gets in his eyes it could cause damage to his cornea. You can use some dilute Betadine (available at any pharmacy-- put some water in a cup and add just enough Betadine so that it looks like tea) if you are wanting to use something that is an antiseptic (kills bacteria). You can give him some Benadryl, as the swelling could be due to an allergic reaction from the bush. See the attached article for dosing information. If he is pawing at his face, put an E-collar (cone of shame) own him so he doesn't scratch his skin or eyes. If he isn't looking better in the morning, or if he is getting more uncomfortable, more swollen, or starts vomiting or showing any other symptoms, seek emergency veterinary care. https://www.petcoach.co/pet-medication/benadryl/

hello! so my dog had an allergic reaction which caused her face to swell (mostly her eyes,mouth,also itching and vomiting) i called a vet and i gave her 2 doses of dexamethasone. after that her eyes have gone back to normal and her breathing is also
The swelling can take a day or two to resolve. Dexamethasone is helpful in an allergic reaction but it is just an anti-inflammatory to stop further reaction. It does not address the histamine release that goes along with an allergic reaction. She probably needs an antihistamine as well. I suggest you give her Benadryl (diphenhydramine) every 8 hours for the next day or so. The dose is 1mg per pound of body weight so if she is 50 pounds she would need 50mg of Benadryl. If the swelling is still present after 36 hours or so then she should go see the vet. I doubt the tick is responsible for the swelling but stranger things have happened. As long as you removed it I would not be worried about it. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
