Why does my dog wake up coughing and gagging if his lungs are healthy?

My dog has been having this thing where in the middle of his sleep he suddenly wakes up and has like a cough that sounds like gaging. I took him to my local vet the doctor checked his lungs and said they are good and healthy so do you know what this might be? Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 21 days old | 3 lbs

Hello! It sounds like Buddy could either have kennel cough, nasal mites or possibly a collapsing trachea. I'm not sure what breed your dog is but collapsing trachea is common in small breed dogs. Kennel cough and nasal mites cause what sounds like a cough. I would google videos of each to see if your pet is showing a cough or reverse sneeze which occurs with those infections and then go back to your get for treatment.
