My rescued dog has fleas after fipronil. Is it safe to reapply early?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 34 lbs

I just rescued a dog from spca. Records show she was treated w fipronil on 9/24. I just pulled 2 fleas off of her- 1 looked like it bit her. Should I reapply sooner? Her records show it's due 10/25, but seems like she needs more.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Hana but I'm so glad that you saved her from the shelter. Frontline (fipronil) can actually be applied every 3 weeks so it's close enough for you to apply. I will tell you that in my own experiences with fipronil, it seems to be less effective on fleas. There seem to be lots of reports of product failure with fipronil and I have even noticed that with my personal pets. So go ahead and reapply. Remember to not bathe Hana for at least 2-3 days and I always advise if you need to bathe her, get some oatmeal shampoo without soap or detergent. Soaps and detergent containing shampoos will strip some of the product off of her and will make it even less effective and cut down on the time that the product will work. If the fipronil continues to fail I would consult with your local veterinarian and see what products they would advise in your area. Good luck with Hana
