New shelter dog has red rash. What to do when home remedies fail?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | 7 years and 4 months old | 60 lbs

We just brought our new dog home from the shelter 2 days ago and she has a red rash on her belly and under arms. I've tried oatmeal bath and cortisone cream but it is still bothering her, what can I do?

I would recommend that you have Baby Girl checked out by a vet. A rash can be caused by many things, including fleas, mange, lice, infections (bacterial or yeast), ringworm, allergies, among others. A vet will examine her and may do a skin scraping to look for mites. Once they have a better idea of the cause then a specific treatment protocol can be discussed.
