My Yorkie is constipated and won't eat. Can I give him cottage cheese?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 10 years and 6 months old

Can I give my Yorkie cottage cheese for constipation? He won't eat pumpkin, boiled chicken or rice today. He seems hungry. We have him an appetite stimulant this morning.

I would recommend that Oliver get checked out by a vet. If he is very constipated, then often he will need lots of fluids and medications to help clear his colon. In more severe cases, they may need sedation so that the hard feces can be manually removed. A decrease in appetite associated with constipation usually indicates that it is very severe, and making him eat more food that cannot come out the back end may make the problem worse. In dogs that are sensitive to milk products, cottage cheese could cause diarrhea, but is not necessarily a recommend treatment for constipation.
