My dog fears his crate after neutering. Is this normal? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 5 months and 13 days old | 47 lbs

My dog was crate trained very well until he got neutered this week. He’s very scared to be left alone and he refuses to go in his crate. He’s even broken out of his crate twice with the cone on his head. Is this a normal thing that dogs go through? Will this pass or should we train him all over again? Also, is there anything we can do to help him be more comfortable and confident in himself again?

Hello. From your description of what's going it sounds like Fennick is in his crate with the cone. If that's the case, this is likely why he's acting fearful all of a sudden. The cone alters their vision and can make them feel vulnerable, especially once inside the crate. I would start with leaving him out of his crate until he can have the cone come off. Then start reintroducing him to his crate by putting treats and toys in there, helping him see that it's safe a fun.
