My 6-week-old puppy is hot, whining, and seems unwell. Is it a fever?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 4 years and 9 months old | 9 lbs

6 week old puppy started whining and with his tongue out. His body feels hot. Mom started whining as to look at him and saying like something is wrong. Puppy is in treatment for apparent ringworm due to sleeping in top of all the other puppies at once and excess cleaning from mom. Puppies sleep apart from mom because of it. Could he have a fever? What can I do?

A fever is possible. You can take a rectal temperature. He may a fever if it is over 102. If he has a fever, it should be checked out by a vet. There are no recommend at home treatments for fever in dogs that are safe. Do not attempt to cool him since you can easily make puppies hypothermic. Either way, I would recommend that he get checked out by a vet to see if there is a possible reaction to his current ringworm treatment.
