My dog has a mouth tumor and won't eat before surgery. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | 14 years and 6 months old | 60 lbs

Hello! We recently discovered that my beagle has a tumor in her mouth. We are planning on having her go through surgery tomorrow but in the meantime she does not want to eat. My guess is because she is in pain rather than lack of appetite. Any advice on how to get her to open her mouth and eat. We bought her baby food so it’s easier but no luck.

You can't force her to eat, maybe with strong pain killers she could regain her appetite a little but even then it is unlikely. as the surgery is tomorrow i wouldn't be too worried even if she does not eat anything until the surgery.
