Why is my dog constantly scratching and chewing his skin raw?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Lhasa Apso | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 10 months old | 28 lbs

My dog has non stopped chewing on himself and scratching for a few days now. He has just broken the skin so I’m concerned that it’s something more.

A lot of dogs have allergic skin disease and their immune system over reacts to everyday things such as grass or dust or certain foods etc. It can be so bad that it drives them mad with itch. In Cappo's case you will need to take him to the vet as he will likely now need treatment for the broken skin. The vet can have a look and see if there are any obvious reasons for the itching such as parasites, impacted anal glands or infection. If not they should be able to advise you regarding allergic skin and come up with a plan to tackle it.
