What to do with a new unvaccinated kitten around kids before shots?

Hello a cat about 6 months old was given to us yesterday her mother was a stray but the neighbor cared for and fed the litter until they were all adopted. I have two small children and her appointment isn’t until two weeks from now. What should I do about her staying with us because she hasn’t had any shots yet?

How lovely of you to take in Haliegh! Because she isn't vaccinated, keep her indoors at all times and keep her isolated from any other cats in your home. Be sure to practice good hygiene after petting her, and washing your hands thoroughly after cleaning her litter box. She may not be used to small children, so only let your children interact with her when you are observing them. Be sure to have them wash their hands as well right after petting them. Because Jiji hasn't been vaccinated before, she will need at least two rounds of vaccines given four weeks apart in order to have full immunity. Vaccinating her on Monday will not be enough to protect her. Make sure your dad fully cleans the room, and bring your own food and water bowls as well as litter box so that she doesn't share anything with his cat. Keep your kitten in the room, and allow her to have no contact with the other cat. I do recommend getting her vaccinated, so have her seen by the vet on Monday to start the process. Best of luck!

Congratulations on your new kitten! Vaccines are given between 7-8 weeks and continue every 4 weeks until about 16 weeks of age. Since she may have a bit of a respiratory infection, you will want to hold off on vaccination until she recovers. Have her examined by your veterinarian and treated if indicated. She can be tested for FeLV (feline leukemia) and FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) as well as for intestinal parasites. She can be dewormed now and again in 2-3 weeks. This should all be done if it wasn't prior to adoption. Once she recovers, she can receive a rabies vaccine and begin her series of FVRCP (feline distemper) vaccines. If she is to be an outdoor cat, an FeLV vaccine is also recommended. You can discuss an appropriate vaccine protocol with your veterinarian. She can be spayed when she is 6 months old.

Hello. Hopefully your kitten will have some maternal immunity, that is, immunity from his mother. If you keep him indoors with no exposure to other unvaccinated cats, he will be fine until you can start his vaccinations. The important thing is to minimize all potential exposure, so no going outdoors, even into a protected area, until he receives his entire kitten series. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

I have just found out that the person I got my kitten from lied about him being vaccinated. This worries me and I just want to know if he is at risk at all. He is 3 months old and is an indoor cat
Oh no! That is very frustrating to not be told the truth, but it is a good thing you know now. It is a little difficult to assess risk if it is uncertain if your kitten was raised by its mother. If so, and she was vaccinated, she could have passed some maternal antibodies on to your kitty. The biggest risk for kittens is through exposure to other cats. If your kitty is an indoor kitty with no other contact with other cats this significantly decreases his risk. What is most important now is to start his vaccinations with your vet, to have him tested for the kitty viruses (feline leukemia and FIV), and to have him checked for intestinal parasites (if not already performed/dewormer given). Just because he is older does not mean he can not get his vaccines, he will just need less vaccines than a younger kittens. Typically we vaccinate with FVRCP (for kitty upper respiratory viruses and panleukopenia) and rabies. If your kitty will eventually be going outside then vaccination for feline leu

This is great. I would freshen up your Angora cat's vaccination and when you adopt your new kitten, make sure it is examined, wormed and vaccinated by your veterinarian. All should be well then. Oh, and there will be a lot of hissing and spitting....do not despair. It will take time but eventually they will at least tolerate each other or even like each other. Make sure you give your older kitty just as much loving as up to now so she does not feel neglected.

I'm glad you are doing your homework before bringing new fur babies into the situation. Most shelters will routinely deworm their pets and test for leukemia and FIV. So you definitely want to make sure these treatments/tests are run prior to adopting the new kittens. Its not unusual for new cats and kittens to break with upper respiratory infections within the first 2 weeks of being adopted. Herpes virus is very common in cats (some estimate 80% of cats carry the virus) and it comes out in the stress related to being in a shelter and being rehomed. Now, this is not going to happen to every cat/kitten but its not unusual. Therefore, your best chance to avoid this would be to get a cat/kitten that has been kept in a foster home. It will likely still have herpes but the environment should be less stressful, therefore less risk of the virus becoming active. Keep the new pet separated for 2 weeks. Do adoption agencies typically vaccinate for Parvo by default? I was looking through my cat’s papers and only see a rabies vaccination and a convenia injection in addition to some blood work but no paperwork specifically for Feline Panleukopenia viru
Kitties don't get vaccinated for parvovirus becuase they can't get parvovirus as this is a dog only disease. However cats do get vaccinated for FVRCP combo vaccine which includes the Panleukopenia virus. If you were to get your cat vaccinated for FVRCP now and he has not recently been exposed to any other animals or outside in the past 10-14 days, then he is fine to meet your new kitty this weekend. However if your cat Zeus does go outdoors, you should vaccinate now and then wait at least 10 days before introducing a new kitty into the home. Most adoption agencies will vaccinate for FVRCP, but then again if it is not in your cat Zeus's records, you have to assume he did not get this vaccine. I hope this helps. So for a kitten this age, I would first recommend a feline leukemia/fiv test prior to bringing him home with your own kitties. This is a blood test that the vet's office can do to test for these diseases that are contagious to other cats. The kitten will then need a rabies vaccine, a feline distemper vaccine, and a feline leukemia vaccine if he will ever be going outdoors or around other cats that go outdoors. The feline distemper and feline leukemia vaccine will need to be boostered 3 to 4 weeks after the initial vaccination. The vaccines will then be good for one year. The price will vary by the vet office but you can always call them and ask for pricing information.

Great questions! Pixie will not be old enough for his first vaccines until he is at least six weeks of age. Feline core vaccines include FVRCP (feline distemper combo) and a Rabies vaccine. If he is an outdoor cat, the FeLV vaccine (feline leukemia) should be considered. The FVRCP needs to be given in a series of three shots, each given four weeks apart, for her to be fully vaccinated. The schedule looks like this: The first shot is given at 6-8 weeks of age, the second at 10-12 weeks of age, and the final one given at 14-16 weeks of age. He will not be old enough for his rabies vaccine until he is 12 weeks of age, and he will need a booster of it at 16 weeks of age to be fully vaccinated. It's fine to allow him to lick your fingers, but don't let him scratch them. You want to discourage this behavior now, or it will get worse and harder as he grows ups. Good luck, I hope this helps!

How far away (in feet) should I keep a newly adopted kitten (formerly outside, socialized semi-feral) away from my house cat during any health quarantine period, as I do not have a separate room to keep her in, only a cage?
Congratulations on your new pet! Physical distance is not as important as actual contact. If your new kitten is in a cage or crate, this still likely allows for the cats to touch each other through the bars. Certain viruses can be transmitted in nasal discharge, saliva, and cats can scratch each other even through small openings. I recommend trying to keep this cage in an area your other cat cannot reach or in a bathroom. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you have!
