Hi and thank you for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Lanosterol is a drug that is current being researched to help dissolve cataracts in people and it not yet FDA approved. However, the drug Lanomax containing Lanosterol, has some evidence behind its effectiveness at dissolving cataracts in dogs. The general consensus now is it may take 6 weeks or more to see slight improvements and does not work well for terminal or mature cataracts. It also should not be used with other conditions of the eye such as corneal ulcers, inflammation or infection of the eye, dry eye, or glaucoma. Surgical removal of cataracts is still the gold standard of treatment and produces the best results ( full removal of cataract). Hope this helps!
