Dog has a growing, firm bump on shoulder/neck. Is it a tumor or cyst?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Female | spayed | 78 lbs

My dog has had this bump on her for a while and I'm not sure what it is - I didn't think it was anything to be alarmed by, but I belive it has gotten bigger - it is located on the top her shoulder/neck area. It's fairly hard to the touch with a little squish. Do you think it's a tick? Bug? Tumor? Or just a dermatological issue?

Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This appears to be a skin mass/tumor and can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). My hunch tells me it is likely a sebaceous gland cyst (benign tumor); however, it is always best to get masses tested through your vet to be sure. Masses like this are often removed during another surgical procedure, such as a teeth cleaning. Removal should be considered in case this thing ruptures or causes irritation to Sydney in the near future. I hope things work out well for your pet Sydney. Take care.
