My Yorkie got sick from Nexgard. Can he take antibiotics post-surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 10 years and 6 months old

My Yorkie became violently ill yesterday from nexguard. He also had the same reaction to topical. He had bladder stone surgery two wceeks ago. The antibiotics they prescribed were to strong and he was prescribed a lower dose of amocillan. The vet wants us to start him back on this today. Is this really safe considering yesterday's incident.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Oliver. This is very hard to answer without knowing all of the details. First, I would make sure that this gets reported either by you or your veterinarian if you bought it through your vet. Adverse reactions like this need to be reported and often times the manufacturer will reimburse for any medical bills accrued due to the reaction. So get this reported as soon as possible. Secondly, with everything that is going on, you should contact your vet who treated Oliver and get their opinion on giving the antibiotic. They know all of the details and they can assess Oliver again if needed and make a better judgement call. Good luck with Oliver.
