Hi. It is most likely a strain or sprain, but without a full exam it is hard to say. I would rest him very strictly for 4-6 weeks, call your veterinarian to make an appointment to get it checked out. Do not give any over the counter or human medicine. Only through your veterinarian. Good luck

Hello. Lumos may have sprained or strained a ligament in his knee. This is a pretty common injury in very active & larger breed dogs. If you can control his activity for the next 7-10 days, he may just heal without much intervention. You might have your vet take a look at this as a round of anti-inflammatory medications would certainly make him feel better. But just like if you sprained something, rest is the best medicine. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

I am sorry to hear about Duke. If you do not see any swelling or bruising you can try restricting his activity to let the leg rest- confine to a crate or small room and only outside while on a leash to potty and then back in, no rough housing/jumping. If he is still limping in a few days or at any point it seems worse/swollen/painful/bruised then a trip to the vet is recommended.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Nelly. It is good that there is not swelling on the limb and that you are able to apply pressure without her reacting. Hopefully she suffered a mild sprain or strain. If she is otherwise acting normal, keep her very quiet for the remainder of the day. This means no running, jumping, or stairs. Take her out on a leash to go potty and bring her straight back inside. If the lameness resolves with rest, it is likely not anything to worry about for her. If it does not resolve or she starts acting sick today, then she will need to see a veterinarian. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!
