Why is my Border Collie so protective of my infant, acting maternal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 8 years and 8 months old | 45 lbs

Why does my border collie seem obsessed with my infant grandson, he constantly licks him and lays by him and wont even go outside when the baby is here, when fed, he eats as fast as he can to go back to the baby, he doesnt appear jealous, doesnt look for more affection from us, which is what my other border collie does, its like some weird maternal instinct!

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Bandit is behaving like a very dedicated Border Collie. His instinct to protect a new member of the herd ( family ) has really been kicked into high gear. I think this is fascinating. It will be interesting to see how strongly Bandit continues to bond with your grandson as he grows up. Take care.
