My dog gets jealous when I pet my new kitten. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | 3 months and 5 days old

Jealousy? I've had my Chihuahua for about 2 yrs. He's a big mama's boy, utterly my shadow. About a week ago, we adopted a shelter rescue kitten. Every time our kitten gets attention, our dog will get in between us, claw my hand so i stop petting him or do anything to redirect the attention to him. I give my dog attention, problem is that v He wants 100% of it. Otherwise, they are besties and get along great! The dog grooms him, they play etc. How should I approach his behavior? What should I do

Hi and thank you for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh my! This sounds like a conumdrum! This can be very common occurance in dogs that suddenly have a new house mate. Here's a strategy that can help. Next time you are trying to give Milo the cat some love on the sofa, ask your pup to sit, stay, or lay down. Give treat when he does and then give Milo some love. Immediatley come back to your pup and give him a treat and love on him. Rinse and Repeat many times over the course of a few days. Each time, spend a little more tme with Milo before going back to the pup. I hope this helps and best wishes to you!

I'm glad they are getting along. That is normal behavior to ask for attention when you are paying attention to Milo. I find that my animals do that too so I often have one on one side and the other on the other side so I can pet them both and not have them get into a fight. As Milo has only been there a short time I wouldn't worry too much since it seems like they will get along and he will accept Milo and let you share your attention once things settle down. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for your pets.
