My protective dog attacks visitors and strangers. How can I stop it?

My dog is extremely protective over my family and I. Whenever we have company over we have to keep him away in a separate room; otherwise, he’ll attack them. When he’s in the room he gets extremely anxious and cries. I’m too scared to take him for walks because I fear he will attack someone. He is 5yrs old. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 5 months old | 25 lbs
