My protective dog attacks visitors and strangers. How can I stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 5 months old | 25 lbs

My dog is extremely protective over my family and I. Whenever we have company over we have to keep him away in a separate room; otherwise, he’ll attack them. When he’s in the room he gets extremely anxious and cries. I’m too scared to take him for walks because I fear he will attack someone. He is 5yrs old.

Hi. This is definitely concerning and I'm sure it is hard to see and deal with. It's good that you know him well and protect others. With this severity, I recommend googling for a veterinary behaviorist in your area. This is a veterinarian that specializes in behavior. They would be the best to give you advice.
