My pregnant dog is due today, won't eat, no labor. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Newfoundland | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 2 months old | 120 lbs

My pregnant newfoundland is due today but she quit eating 5 days ago, I tried eggs, cottage cheese, milk. etc. But she will not eat it. She also has been whining the past week. But not panting or showing signs of labor. Is she having a false pregnancy? Last litter she had 4 puppies(1 dead) and she was 10 days late but she ate last time. She does not look like she has very many puppies in her. Should I be concerned about her not eating for 5 days.

She needs to be eating something, or she will have very little energy for the whelping. Take her to the vet for xrays, then you'll know the size of the litter and will know if she's having trouble or needs a c section. While there, ask for cerenia injections for the next few days, as this is a fantastic anti-nausea drug that has all kinds of benefits. In this case, I'm hoping it will get her eating for you. If she had a dead pup last litter, that tells me she may be dealing with some uterine inertia during labor, and could benefit from calcium or oxytocin injections, but this requires your working with a reproduction veterinarian through this process. Hope that helps, and best of luck!
