My senior dog's inguinal hernia is getting bigger. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 9 months old | 7.7 lbs

Hello, my dog has inguinal and umbilical hernia since hes a little (hes almost 11yrs now). the local vet said its fine to leave it as it was, but 6months ago his umbilical got worse (hes in pain, the bump is red and bigger) so we did the surgery. We lately just notice that his inguinal got much bigger as well, but other than that he looks fine and healthy. My vet said to leave it bcs hes already old. but im still concern about it, is it normal? thank you!

I have to say i disagree with your vet. both hernias should have been operated on when he was younger. he isn't young but isn't very old either, my advise would be to do the surgery to repair the inguinal hernia.
