My dog clipped her nail, no limp but cries when touched. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Springer Spaniel | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 40 lbs

My dog jumped into the car and clipped her back nail, she doesn’t limp or notice it even when running but when we go to look at it she pulls away and cries. What should we do about it?

A broken toe nail can be painful because the hard nail that protects to the nerve and blood supply are now exposed. Often they will lick the toes excessviely when it happens. It does require medical attention, usually the nail will have to be cut back to take the sensitivity away. SInce there is no limping now and it is not bleeding, you can keep her rested and restrict acitivty so she won't bump it and hurt it more and take her to the vet tomorrow to have it trimmed often with sedation.
