My senior dog has back pain & mobility issues. What are my options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 10 years and 5 months old | 15 lbs

10.5 yo chihuahua w back problems since jumping off a couch-was on prednisone for 1 mo 2x and muscle relaxers in the past 6 mos too, and now is on novox for the past 3 wks. He no longer drags feet, but has some issues walking, poops without warning, holds urine for 24-40 hrs, lays around and doesnt want to play at all, and barely socializes w family. His back slopes down in the middle now- like he’s trying to ease pain. Surgery is not an option. Will his symptoms get better? Any other options?

There is more you can do for Dexter. He may improve with acupuncture for the neurological deficits and it can relieve his pain and help him relax and enjoy life. As far as the walking goes getting him specific exercises to retrain his legs will improve his walking. If there is a veterinary rehabilitation center near you they should be able to help you with these exercises and get you in touch with an acupuncture veterinarian. If they offer hydrotherapy, walking in the underwater treadmill will improve his strength and gait. Many dogs do get better so please continue with the medication and seek out some alternative treatments if you can. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Dexter.
