Ouch, poor Peanut! Thank you for providing a picture of his tail, as it helps formulate my answer. It looks like from the picture that a scab may be forming, which means it's healing. Gently clean it once with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

Poor girl. It really likely just needs some antibiotics to fully heal here. If a cut gets infected, then it will delay the healing process. I would suggest cleaning it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water for now and then get this seen by your vet b/c she likely just needs antibiotics and potentially even closure of the cut to help it heal all the way. She also is likely messing with it b/c it is itchy due to infection. You can place an e-collar on her for now to keep her from getting to the wound. You can find e-collars at your local petstore. I hope that Waffle's wound finally heals all the way. Best of luck moving forward and take care.

Hello, and thank you for using Boop by Petco. Ouch, poor Oscar! The most important thing is to keep that area clean. Use warm soapy water (Dawn dish soap works well) with a clean towel and gently wash to keep it clean of discharge, dirt, and crusting. Don’t use harsher products such as alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, as they will be painful and can damage tissue in the wound. You’re right, that’s not a very easy area to wrap so I recommend leaving it open. You can dab a little neosporin on it as a barrier. However, I’ll warn you that bite wounds have a tendency to get infected, even if you’re doing everything right with wound care. Cat bites in particular are prone to infection. So, monitor it closely and if it’s becoming more red, swollen, painful, and has more discharge, that would indicate it’s likely infected and Oscar would need to see a vet and get antibiotics. Unfortunately, only an x-ray or a bone sticking out of the skin will tell you if it is broken. Tail injuries can be very serious, even if there is not a broken bone. Since they are very far away from the body, there is less blood flow that creates a condition for poor healing. I would strongly recommend seeing a vet. Depending on the amount of skin that is damaged, the vet may recommend amputation of the damaged part of the tail to help with healing. If you choose to treat at home, you need to try to clip the hair away from the wound so it can stay clean. You will need to prevent all licking, since this will delay healing and spread bacteria. You should clean it 2-3 times per day with water and a mild chlorhixidine wound soap. You can apply neosporin after cleaning the wound. Do not use alcohol or peroxide.

Tails can be very difficult to keep wrapped or bandaged. Consider an e-collar (cone) to prevent licking and to allow healing. That wound in the image should be addressed by your veterinarian. Ideally, the hair around it should be clipped to prevent contamination. The wound itself should be gently cleaned. Sutures may be indicated if it is a fresh wound or deep wound. Antibiotics and pain management may also be indicated.

I would discontinue the soap and peroxide. They are great for initial wound cleaning and removing bacteria, but continued use can damage healthy tissue and be very irritating and painful. You can just use a warm wet washcloth to clean the wound as needed, or if Fuzz will allow you can run that part of her tail under warm water for 5 minutes at a time to flush out any bacteria that may be present. Bactine is ok. Signs that she should see a vet right away would be a poor appetite, progressive lethargy, swelling around the wound, creamy discharge or a foul-smelling odor, or a rectal temperature over 103. After examination by the vet, they may prescribe antibiotics or other treatments, or may recommend amputation of the tail if any bones are broken. Wounds on a cat tail can be very difficult to treat since there is not a very good blood supply and it is an appendage that moves a lot!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. It is difficult to see how deep the wound goes from your pictures. I would make sure that he is not licking the wound and making it worse. You can use a plastic cone around the neck to prevent licking. I would keep the area clean with a diluted solution of Betadine and saline (a light brown color) and clean the wound 2-3 times daily until you can be seen by a vet. He will likely need a course of antibiotics and depending on the depth of the wound, may require a drain be surgically placed in the wound to help facilitate healing and proper drainage. If there are puncture wounds, it's likely Sadie was bitten by something causing the hairless, and that can lead to infection. She may need antibiotics to treat the infection, and the vet can prescribed that. Please do not put any neosporin or topical antibiotic ointment on her tail. Although quite safe on superficial wounds, cats groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed. The vet can prescribe oral antibiotics if needed.

You can keep the cut clean with 3% hydrogen peroxide and using a cone around his head to prevent him from licking or bothering the cut further.
