My dog keeps having diarrhea and vomiting white phlegm. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 15 lbs

My dog has been on and off with diarrhea and vomiting white plegm for the past few days. The first day diarrhea and then went away because the next day he had a regular stool. The following day he had diarrhea again and then today he threw up white yellowy phlegm. What can it be, it seems to be on and off.

Hi, thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach and I am sorry to hear about Sammy. Min. Schnauzers are a breed in particular that are known to have some gastrointestinal/pancreas problems and in general have a more sensitive stomach. Sammy is a young do so this may not apply to him. In a younger dog having some intermittent gastrointestinal problems usually the top reasons for this problem may be intestinal parasites or dietary indiscretion. I would recommend taking a fecal sample to Sammy's veterinarian to check for parasites. If you are able to, temporarily change him to a bland diet of cooked chicken and rice for 1-2 days then slowly change back to his normal diet. If his appetite declines, vomiting persists, and/or diarrhea worsens he should be evaluated right away by his doctor. Best of luck with Sammy.
