My golden retriever has a bleeding growth on his tail. Is it cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 11 months old | 65 lbs

Dear doctor, My 10yr old golden retriever has developed a bleeding pimple on the tail since 1 week. Initially it was a small raised papule but now its around 0.5 x 0.5cm and bleeds profusely even when left alone. 1 course of anyibiotc was given as advised by our vet and it had stpped bleeding only to return after he bit on the pimple. Kindly advice regarding any possibilty of malignancy? Very much worried.

Hello, sorry to hear about Tippu. The skin directly on that nodule does look different compared to the surrounding skin. I would be worried that it could potentially be something malignant, especially if it continues to bleed and is not bigger. It may be small enough to remove on its own and submit it for histopathology. If it comes back positive for a malignant tumor, and clean margins were not achieved, then potentially amputation of the tail may follow biopsy. If it is malignant, then you will likely need to obtain chest x-rays and maybe an abdominal ultrasound to rule out evidence of spread. Hope this helps and best of luck.
