My dog and cat fought. What to do now and how to prevent more?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 50 lbs

Loki and our teenage cat just had their first ever fight. Mums cat was trying to get some of her cheese and Loki just wanted to play with mums cat I think, she got mad at him and then I think he tried to assert his dominance in a dog like way towards her by growling and mouthing her but not actually hurting her. Loki got out of it with a cut on his nose but mums cat is perfectly fine. I put Loki outside and mums cat in her room what else should I do?

Hello, you should probably avoid feeding them when they are around each other in the future since that seems to be a trigger for Loki. You should clean Loki’s scratch, and you may even put a small amount of triple antibiotic ointment (neosporin) on the scratch. When you left them be around one another again, watch them closely and inspect the environment for any food that could be around which would incite another episode like this past one. Hope this helps and best of luck
