My black dog's bald spots are growing. Is it genetic hair loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 33 lbs

My dog is 3 yr old male black beagle mix. He has baldness mainly on his neck, thighs, and chest. I think the area o f baldness is getting larger lately. My vet told me that it is genetic and no need to worry much.

It looks like Rainy may have color dilution alopecia, which is common in "blue" or diluted colored dogs. There is not much that can be done to prevent or halt the hair loss. I try to rule out other causes of alopecia, including allergies, fleas, mites, and malnutrition, first. You can talk to your vet about supplementing with melatonin as some people find that this will slow down the hair loss, but it is not a guaranteed treatment. https://www.animaldermatology.com/newsletter/429/Derm-Digest-august-2010
