Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 3 months old | 21 lbs

My dog was neutered 4 days ago and I noticed that his incision looks infected, also he hasn’t had a bowel movement since the surgery. He seems to be bothered alot and constant whining. What should I do??

It does look like the incision may be infected. I would have this checked out as soon as possible with a veterinarian. If Charlie has been seen licking it, even once, he should wear an e-collar to prevent spreading bacteria and to avoid a problem with healing. Constipation after surgery can be caused by some types of pain medications, or may be from pain caused during the squatting process. This is also something to discuss with your vet. If Charlie is not on pain medications, then he may need to start them. If he is on pain medications, they may need to be changed or discontinued.
