Why is my cat shaking his head with a runny nose and ear hematoma?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a 4 year old cat that continues to shake his head with drainage coming from his nose. He already has a hematoma in his right ear. What can I do?

I would recommend that Bogey get checked out by a vet. The hematoma in his ear is from shaking his head too vigorously. This could be caused by ear mites, ear infection, or a nasopharyngeal polyp. The nasal discharge could be related if it is caused by a polyp, or may be a secondary issue caused by allergies, something stuck in the nose, cancer, upper respiratory infection, or something else. After examination, the vet may be able to tell if the two issues are related or not and can prescribe appropriate treatments. Since we don't yet know the cause of his problems, I cannot recommend a specific treatment at this time.
