My dog's spay incision opened after I removed sutures. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 6 months and 5 days old | 35 lbs

Hi. My 6 mo old german shepherd was spayed on Monday, Sept. 25th. This past Friday I tried getting ahold of the vet that performed the operation to see when I could have the sutures on her incision removed. They never answered my phone calls, but I read online about some people removing the sutures themselves so I did that.. Friday and Saturday the sight of the incision looked fine, but today it has opened up. It isn't seeping or bleeding so IDK if it will close up on its own or if we need vet

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It does look like the skin layer of the skin has opened. It will close on its own but I recommend having the vet look at it to make sure it doesn’t appear infected. If so, she will require antibiotics. I do not recommend removing sutures without having a vet look at the incision because sometimes they need to stay in longer. Good luck and kisses to Zoe!
