My puppy fought and has gashes. He's whimpering, should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 20 lbs

My dog got into an altercation with his brother. They are both puppies, a little under 3 months neither have had their rabies shots. One of them has several gashes on his front right leg, one of which was bleeding pretty badly but stopped. We cleaned the wounds and applied gauze. What further steps could I take? The puppy is still whimpering an hour later. Do I need a Vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I highly recommend that you have both of your pups evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. These wounds can get infected very easily. Also, it is crucial to check if any of these wounds need further local therapy such as stitches. Your veterinarian could also start pain medications as usually lacerations like that are painful. Good luck and have a good day!
