My dog's hookworms came back. When should I give the second dose?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi! We have a dog that got hookworm from contaminated feces of another animal in our yard. We treated her with 2 doses of medication, however our vet instructed we give the 2nd dose after one week. Everything I've read says 2-4 weeks for the 2nd dose, considering the life cycle of the larvae into adults. Our dog got them again. Would you recommend giving the 2nd dose after one week, or two weeks?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, I recommend treating with first round then repeating a round 3-4 weeks after the first. Then her stool rechecked 4 weeks after the 2nd round. Be sure to start your dog on a good heartworm preventative like Intercpetor or Sentinel which can help prevent reinfection with Hookworms. If your dog has been off heartworm preventatives have her tested before restarting. I hope this helps and good luck!
