My senior cat is congested. Can I wait if he's still eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 16 years and 4 months old | 17 lbs

My 16 year old cat developed an URI three weeks ago. Received antibiotics, eye ointment and fluids. All bloodwork came back good. He improved a lot but has become congested again the last few days. But he's still eating and not lethargic. I don't have much money so is this something I can wait out? If he's still eating and walking around does that mean he's not too sick?

As long as Sunshine is eating and drinking you can monitor him at home. I recommend feeding wet food with added water and warm it in the microwave for eight seconds. The food will smell better and increase his eating and the added water will help maintain his normal hydration. If he should become depressed, lethargic or stop eating, please take him back for a recheck right away. He's a senior cat so I don't want him to go long without treatment if he's not feeling well. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Sunshine.
