My dog is limping on her back leg. How can I help her at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | unspayed | 11 years and 11 months old | 11.05 lbs

My dog leg is limping her back leg. Idk what happened. I think its her hip bone or something, its seems to be in a weird position.Last time, she was able to put the leg down slightly. But now she is raising it up again. She is not able to go up or down stairs like she used to. And she can do tricks like sit or high five. I really want to help her but have no money to bring her to the vet. How can i help her. (food, supplement, exercise) And how can make sure she is always comfortable.

Chacha may have a luxating patella or cruciate ligament strain. Those are the most common reasons for holding up a rear leg in a poodle. I recommend you carry her up and down the stairs, prevent jumping on and off the furniture and take her for short slow leash walks several time a day. This should improve over the next few months if she stays quiet and doesn't keep injuring the leg with running and jumping. To reduce inflammation I give an omega 3 or fish oil supplement, and a joint supplement such as Cosequin. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Chacha.
