Is homemade dog food healthy? Can dogs have dairy like yogurt or milk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 14 lbs

I usually give my dachshund only home made meals contains cook chicken breast and carrot or potato. some time i give him cooked rice or boiled egg white. Also i adding a little bit of chicken water to his food sometimes. furthermore I have been feeding my buddy low fat yogurt or milk (0% or low lactose) for breakfast thinking it was good for his bones and teeth. Someone recently told me diary products and home made foods are not good for dogs. what do you recommend? Thanks

Great question! The person who told you dairy products are not good for dogs is correct. It's never recommended to give dogs dairy products because it causes GI upset. As for home made foods, your friend is also correct they typically aren't good for dogs. That's because that many home made diets are not nutritionally balanced, and your dog won't be getting all the nutrients they need. I personally recommend feeding a dog formulated food, but if you want to feed a homemade diet, I will put links to two websites below that have recipes for homemade dog foods that are nutritionally balanced. I hope this helps :-) https://secure.balanceit.com https://www.petdiets.com
