How to know if my dog has enough milk for puppies? What emergency formula?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 8 lbs

How do I know she's producing milk? Would it be recommended to buy bottles and milk formula for emergencies? Which milk formula would better I have only seen the one for kittens?

You will be able to tell if Luna is producing enough milk by the reaction of her puppies. If they are crying frequently, then they aren't getting enough nutrition. Should they be gaining weight each day, then they are getting enough milk. It's fine to buy bottles and milk formula just in case, it's great to have around if you need it in an emergency. KMR is the brand I recommend, and it can be used for kittens and puppies. I hope this helps :-)

Weigh the puppies daily. They should be gaining weigh every day, and if they are not, then they are not getting enough milk and Heaven's milk may be drying up. In that case, you will need to bottle feed the puppies with puppy formula.

If you haven't yet, transition her to a quality puppy food. Feed her this diet until she weans the litter then transition slowly back to an adult maintenance diet. Provide plenty of fresh water as well. If necessary, you can supplement the pups with a puppy milk replacer such as Esbilac or Pet Lac. Either may be purchased from your veterinarian or the local Petco.

I can understand your concern here. It is possible that not all of her mammary glands are producing milk, but that a few are. If the kittens are constantly crying after latching, and not seeming to settle, then that could be a clue that they are not receiving enough milk. You can also monitor them for regular peeing and bowel movements. If they are going regularly, typically after every feeding, then they are getting enough milk from the mama cat. If you suspect that the kittens are not getting enough milk, then I would suggest trying to supplement their feedings with kitten milk replacement formula from your local feed store or pet store. The only way to make sure they are getting enough milk is to weigh the puppies every day and make sure the puppies are gaining weight. Neonatal puppies should have a weight gain of 5-10% of birth weight daily --they may lose a little the first 24 hours, but after that we need to see this weight gain. If they are not gaining at that level, they need to be evaluated, and if otherwise normal, supplemented with formula and tube feeding to achieve this weight gain. Sounds like everything is going great with Juliet and the puppies. Remember to feed Juliet puppy food during this time because her nutritional requirements are very high during lactation. Good luck

It might be that she just does not have enough milk and there is not much you can do about it apart from starting to bottle feed the puppies ! Puppies that don’t feed properly can go downhill quite rapidly so I would urge you to visit your nearest vet surgery or pet shop to purchase some powdered puppy milk. Bella may not be producing enough milk, and you are doing exactly the right thing by giving them KMR. One way to see if Bella is producing enough milk is to weigh the kittens daily to see if they are gaining weight. If they aren't gaining weight, keep supplementing them with the KMR. Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. if the puppies are gaining weight, not crying for food and are passing urine and stools regularly, it means that they are getting enough milk. In some bitches it takes a while to produce milk once the puppies latch on the nipples. When the puppies are about 3 weeks of age, you can start feeding them small amounts of wet food mixed with warm water.

It can sometimes be hard to tell if puppies are getting enough milk! If you want to be sure, you can weigh the puppies each day. As long as they gain weight every day, this is a good sign that things are fine. If they aren't gaining weight, or if they look overly thin, you may need to bottle feed them with puppy milk replacer in addition to letting them nurse on their mother.

If the puppies are latching and nursing then stop to sleep with firm tummies they are more than likely getting all the milk they need. If they seem distant or cold to the touch and not trying to Nurse you can always bottle feed one to measure the amount they are getting.

Hello. Just from your pictures, everyone looks happy & healthy. I have never seen a dog produce so much milk that it smeared all over the puppies face. Most of the time it looks exactly as you describe. You can buy a little gram scale & weigh each puppy once a day & as long as there is no weight loss, all is good. The signs to look for are crying, distressed puppies, crawling away from mom, cold & pale. Your picture shows a very contented mom, & round, pink puppies, so I think all is good right now.
