Dog has diarrhea after kids' illness. Is white penis discharge normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 6 days old | 30 lbs

My kids have taken turns being sick with flu like symptoms over the last two weeks. My pitbull sleeps with my son who has had Diarrhea for a few days and now the dog has Diarrhea. Is this just him getting a bug from the kids or should we be worried. My son has also noticed white stuff at the tip of the dogs penis.

Dogs and people can get infected with the same bacterias such as salmonella and E. Coli, but viruses are not usually shared. If he is vomiting or not eating I would recommend he be seen right away. I would also evaluate the kids hygiene habits with the dogs. Like not sharing food, no licking on the face, etc. male dogs commonly have a small amount of white to yellow discharge at the top of the penis, which is normal.
