Why is my senior cat vomiting, having diarrhea, and not using the litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 16 lbs

Hello my cat has had soft and occasionally small amounts of blood in his stool. Over time he has graduated to just straight Diarrhea minus the blood. He also vomits a couple times a week shortly after eating as well. He is about 12 or 13 and otherwise completely happy and healthy with no other visible changes in behavior or any other signs of discomfort. Finally... to add insult to injury, he doesn't like to go in the litter box. he prefers the living room rug. HELP

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend having a vet look at George and run blood work, X-rays and an intestinal parasite check. Even though he is acting healthy, he is clearly not. He could have parasites, a virus, kidney disease, GI disease, diabetes- it really is a long list of things to rule out. He isn’t going in the box because he is equating the box to the discomfort he is having with his diarrhea. I hope you are able to find the cause of his illness and get him feeling better soon. Good luck and kisses to George!
