Dog fell, now scared, crying, won't go out. Is it pain or fear?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 31 lbs

My dog recently was injured due to a fall down the stairs after he bolted during Hurricane Irma. Now I have to pick him up to go outside because he won't come to the door. He usually sleeps by my bed. He has cried out at night several times now and is scared to be in my room. He keeps staring at my nightstand and the floor beside my bed. I don't know why this is happening. I have tried reassuring him that it's okay. Pleas help!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bailey! I think Bailey may be in pain after the fall. He could have injured his back or neck and is afraid to go down the stairs because it hurts. Crying out randomly is common when dogs are in pain especially when their back and necks are injured. I would have Bailey seen by your Vet to see if he is truly in pain or traumatized behaviorally from the Hurricane. If there is no medical issue he may need to be started on anti-anxiety medications and re-training. I hope this helps and I wish Bailey a speedy recovery!
