Is Adequan safe for my dog with arthritis on meds and liver concerns?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 7 years and 9 months old | 52 lbs

Can I start my dog on Adequan injections while she is taking doxycycline and gabapentin? She has a history of elevated ALP and just slightly elevated ALT. The attached photo is lab results from just before she started the doxycycline, at the time her ALT was back in the normal range. I also have a few Previcox tablets to try, but she has never used them before and I’m hesistant as I know that can be hard on the stomach as well as the liver and kidneys.

Hello, yes you can very safely start using the Adequan for Stella's arthritis. I would very much prefer that you speak with Stella's vet before using the Prexicox. If you were my client, I would either recommend increasing the gabapentin ( if appropriate ) or using the newest NSAID called Galliprant. This newer medication is much gentler on the liver than anything we have ever had for managing arthritis in dogs. If this is not an option, then I would recommend using a liver neutraceutical like Denamarin to protect the liver as much as possible while on the Previcox. But I think the Adequan is a very good idea. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Take care.
