My 12-week Cavapoo puppy is distracted. How to leash train and potty?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 11 days old | 8 lbs

I have a 12 week old Cavapoo we've had for a week. He is very easily distracted by everything outside so now doesn't want to walk on his leash. Often too distracted to go potty. Thoughts?

Just keep trying! You may need to get in a routine of walking him in the same place, preferably with minimal distractions, like a small yard or a private area. Walk in large circles and repeat a phrase like "go potty" over and over until he goes. When he does, give him lots of praise, a special treat, then continue on your walk to more exciting places. Puppies do not come leash trained, and it may take several more months for him to get use to walking with something attached to his body.
