Why is my dog suddenly tired and warm? How to check for fever?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 10 months and 27 days old

My female basenji is very athletic and loves to play but today, after I made ger bath, she is sleeping most of the time... She even did not play with her favourite toy... I examined her ears and paws and felt a bit warmer than before. Her body was also a bit warmer. What could be the possible reason behind her behaviour? And what medicine should I give her? How can we be sure at home that a dog is having fever?

Nancy may just be very tired from her play session, sore from the exercise, or be sick from some illness or heat stress. Since we don't know what is causing her lethargy, I cannot recommend any medications. You can take a rectal temperature with a human thermometer. If it is over 102.5 then she has a fever and should be checked out by a vet. If she does not have a fever, then monitor her for 24 hours. If she is still lethargic then she should be checked out by a vet.
