Dog has whipworm on Heartgard. What treatment & should I switch?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 67 lbs

I just started my dog on Heartgard Plus by giving him his first month dose earlier this week. Today, I got results from his fecal test and he tested positive for whipworm. Heartgard Plus doesn't treat whipworm. What medicine should I use to treat whipworm? Should I discontinue giving him the Heartgard Plus? Thanks for your help!

This is correct that Heartgard doesn't cover whipworms. I would talk to your vet about prescribing him a dewormer for the whipworms. Depending on the type of dewormer they have available, he may need to be dewormed again in the future. Finally, since we know you have whipworms in your environment you may consider switching him to something that covers whipworms on a monthly basis. Talk to you vet about which heartworm preventatives they have available that cover whipworms (ex: trifexis, interceptor). I hope this helps!
