Is an IV necessary for dog spay? What if my vet charges extra?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | 1 year and 9 months old | 9 lbs

My dig us getting spayed today the vet said i would have to pay additional charges for an i.v.for fluids..wont she die without having an i.v for fluids because she will be losing blood

Blood loss is rarely significant during neuter surgery (10-15ml would be common) and intravenous fluids are not necessarily required unless significant complications arise. You should discuss the risks and benefits in her case with your vet as they may be recommended if she has previous medical concerns such as kidney disease
