My dog has a swollen leg. How long does swelling typically last?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 11 months old | 30 lbs

My dog has swelling in hes left leg wich occured suddenly. However he was on antibiotic treatment for eye injury wich has healed and now leg swelling occured. We have been taking him to vet since 4 days and the swelling has gone slightly down. Is it that it can take time for swelling to go ? Coz vet told to bring him tomrow last day. Is it that swelling can take a week or two to go down ?

I am sorry to hear about Scooby. It is difficult to say how long it might take for swelling to go down because we do not know the cause. We can have swelling due to an abscess, cellulitis, edema (fluid buildup in the leg), a tumor or mass, trauma and development of a seroma or hematoma, or swelling due to a fracture. If the swelling is still present I would consider additional testing such as an x-ray of the leg, or ultrasound of the leg. If the vet is fairly certain it is due to infection then it could take longer than 4 days for the swelling to resolve but he may need to continue the antibiotics longer.
