Cat has crusty skin after fleas. Should I give her an antihistamine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 years old | 9 lbs

My cat has a crusty eczema looking spot but they had fleas and I know they get little scabies when the fleas start getting bad, so we already treated the house with knockout spray and gave flea meds, but what kind of antihistamine or anything should I give her to clear up any faster? She does not have claws so her scratching isn't like actual scratching with nails.

I'm sorry you are dealing with this with Loca. Flea bites can be very irritating to cats, so I'm glad you have treated the house and Loca. Unfortunately, antihistamines can be very difficult to give to cats because they are very bitter tasting. Most often I have found that when cats have a number of crusts from flea bites, that I need to give them an antibiotic to resolve the crusting, so I would have your vet evaluate her and prescribe an antibiotic to get the crusts to resolve. Sometimes you even need a steroid if the crusts are severe. Good luck! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
