Is this red, scabbed groin rash on my dog a hot spot after neuter?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Male | neutered | 55 lbs

He was neutered 2 weeks ago, went in last week for a checkup and everything was looking good. Gave a sanitary trim this morning and noticed a rash in the groin area. It it red and scabbed with the scabs being slightly yellow. Also found a small scab on his left shoulder this morning (size of a pencil eraser). Pictures of groin attached.

I'm worried that Apollo is developing a hot spot. I have attached a link below with more information on hot spots. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=2714 I would recommend having your vet see Apollo today if possible. The area should be clipped and cleaned to prevent spreading. They will likely prescribe a topical antibiotic/steroid, but may also elect to send home some oral medication too depending on how deep the infection looks. In the meantime, make sure Apollo cannot lick at the area. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
